EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (Jan. 16, 2012) — Dr. Wanda M. Austin, president and CEO of The Aerospace Corporation, has been selected as a winner of the 2012 Horatio Alger Award. She joins a distinguished group of business and community leaders as one of 12 recipients of the honor this year. Austin will be recognized at the 65th annual Horatio Alger Awards Activities, held this April in Washington, D.C.

“We are proud to announce the 12 members of the Horatio Alger Class of 2012. These remarkable individuals represent the Horatio Alger Association’s ideals and support our mission of giving back,” said Tony Novelly, president and CEO, Horatio Alger Association. “These new members will also be part of our 65th anniversary celebration.”

Recipients of the Alger Award are dedicated community leaders who demonstrate initiative and commitment to excellence.

Austin was selected for her commitment to upholding the principles central to the Horatio Alger Association: integrity, hard work, perseverance, and compassion for others. As CEO of Aerospace, Austin has supported mentoring and worked to encourage the next generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

“It is an honor to be selected as a recipient of the 2012 Horatio Alger Award,” said Austin. “The Alger Association’s values align with The Aerospace Corporation’s values of integrity and commitment to excellence and with our corporate commitment to mentoring and STEM education.”

The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans was founded in 1947 with the mission of honoring those who set themselves apart by succeeding in spite of adversity and of encouraging young people to pursue their dreams through higher education. The Alger Association offers scholarships to deserving young people who are working toward college or graduate degrees.
