EL SEGUNDO, Calif., (Jan. 23, 2014) — Dr. Wanda Austin, president and CEO of The Aerospace Corporation, received the first Admiral Samuel L. Gravely Leadership and Service Award from the Pacific Battleship Center aboard the Battleship IOWA in San Pedro, Calif. on Monday, Jan. 20.

The PBC recognized Austin for courageous service and leadership in the community and for demonstrating innovation in her field. In accepting the award, Austin noted that both Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Adm. Gravely were trailblazers in bringing diversity to the workplace, and that she had benefited from their efforts.

“Leaders have an obligation of service, making those around them strong and confident so that they are, in fact, developing their successors,” said Austin. She also gave observations for being a good leader, including: leaders should anticipate and respond to change and leaders must prepare physically and mentally to determine the way forward to execute actions necessary to achieve a goal.

The Admiral Samuel L. Gravely Leadership and Service Award, which will be conferred annually, recognizes African Americans leaders in Battleship IOWA’s community who exemplify the courageous service of the late U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Samuel Lee Gravely. The event is part of Battleship IOWA Remembers, a series of events and ceremonies presented annually by the PBC aboard Battleship IOWA. The series commemorates national, military, and naval dates of importance.
