The Dr. Wanda M. Austin STEM Scholarship

STEM Leaders of the Future

The Dr. Wanda M. Austin STEM Scholarship is awarded annually to a promising student from a Title 1 high school in the Los Angeles area. The four-year scholarship provides a financial stipend, internships, and ongoing educational support from career STEM professionals.

In 2016, the scholarship committee reached out to six local-area Title I high schools (Compton, Hawthorne, Manual Arts, Montebello, St. Bernard, and Verbum Dei) for candidates as part of an ongoing community outreach effort. All prospective awardees were required to submit several items in order to be considered for the scholarship: an essay describing their interest in pursuing a STEM career, recommendation letters, school transcripts, and a statement of financial need. After evaluation of the submissions, the top two candidates were invited to Aerospace for a final interview with the selection committee.

The inaugural 2016 Dr. Wanda M. Austin Scholarship award recipient is Heydy Arias of Montebello High School.
