Barbara Barrett elected to Aerospace board of trustees
EL SEGUNDO, Calif., July 13, 2010 - At its June meeting, The Aerospace Corporation board of trustees elected Ambassador Barbara Barrett to the board. She previously served as a trustee from 2006 to 2008 when she resigned to serve as the United States Ambassador to Finland.
Barrett is president and CEO of Triple Creek Guest Ranch in Montana; a member of the board of the RAND Corporation and secretary of the Space Foundation. Previously Barrett, an international business and aviation attorney, served as deputy administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration and vice chairman of the United States Civil Aeronautics Board.
"It is good to have Barbara back on our board," said Board Chairman Peter Teets. "She brings not only business acumen, but also experience in aerospace and a wealth of knowledge."
An instrument-rated pilot, Barbara has flown internationally in civilian and military aircraft. She trained at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia where she was certified for space flight on the Soyuz TMA-16 launch to the International Space Station.
Barrett has also served on the corporate boards of Raytheon, Exponent and The Mayo Clinic; was a trustee of Thunderbird School of Global Management; chairman of the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy; and a member of the Senior Advisory Board at Harvard's Institute of Politics.
"I strongly believe in the work of Aerospace," Barrett said. "For 50 years The Aerospace Corporation has proved indispensable to our space programs. I consider it a privilege to serve on its board."
Barrett earned her bachelor, master and law degrees at Arizona State University. Honorary doctorates have been conferred by ASU, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Thunderbird and the University of South Carolina. Barrett has been recognized with the Horatio Alger Award, Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship and Sandra Day O'Connor Board Excellence Award from the American Bar Association.
