Davis Inducted Into
University of Maryland Hall of Fame
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (10/16/00) -- Dr. Ruth Davis, board of trustees chair, has been inducted into the University of Maryland Alumni Association Hall of Fame for her contributions in the fields of science and technology.
She was inducted with 13 others at a ceremony earlier this year. The association inducts its alumni into
the Hall of Fame every five years.
Davis received master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Maryland as well as an honorary doctorate. The university honored Davis with the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1993.
A summa cum laude graduate, she was one of the first women at the university to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics. After earning her doctorate, Davis helped to design some of the earliest computers and satellites.
She went on to hold many scientific positions in the federal government, rising to deputy undersecretary of defense for research and advanced technology and later, assistant secretary of energy for resource applications.
She also was director of the Institute for Computer Sciences and Technology at the National Bureau of Standards and was the first director of the National Center for Biomedical Communications in the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. She founded The Pymatuning Group, a Virginia firm specializing in industrial modernization and technology development, in 1980.
Davis has received many honors and awards, including National Women's Economic Alliance Director's Choice Award, Distinguished Service Medals from both the Department of Energy and the Department of
Defense, and the National Civil Service League Award. She joined The Aerospace Corporation's board in 1982.
